July 2026
Overall Map
Smyrna, TN to Abington, VA
Day 1 (Jul 7)
Tuesday: We decided to book hotel at Abington, just a little further than the planned Bristol. We booked hotel at Fairfield Inn in Abington. We've never stayed here before but gambled. We left home around 10:30 am and headed towards
Virginia. Lynn said we could stop in Cookeville and have lunch at Chickfila. However, he put the wrong Chickfila in Waze. Instead of the one on Interstate Drive, Waze took us to the Student Center at Tennessee Tech. We put the address for the other Chickfila but had to go through downtown Cookeville (did not even know there was a downtown). There were multiple redlights, 4-way stops, one blocked street. After a loooong time we made it to ChickFila to find the street was down to just 2 lanes for construction. You know how Chickfila traffic is anyway. There was a busload of cheerleaders. What a disaster. We ate and got back on interstate. We got to Abington around 5:00 pm. We checked in. Oh by the way this hotel charges $7.00/night for parking. It may be this is a little seedy (need security?) as it is right on interstate with a couple of abandoned hotels around. We went to Bella's for some great pizza. Oh by the way, my iPad is still sitting in the den. I went down to gym and walked 35 minutes on treadmill.
Abington, VA to Ashburn, VA
Day 2 (Jul 8)
- Abington to Sterling, VA - 339 miles
- Springhill Suites Ashburn, VA
- Wednesday: I went down to breakfast. We are staying at Fairfield Inn in Abington. It is foggy this morning. We packed up and left hotel. We stopped at first exit for some Love’s gas and drinks. They did not have premium fuel. Only ethanol free and regular. They said because of the lake boaters wanted ethanol free so they replace premium tanks. Out first slowdown for construction was at MM 29 around 9:00 - only lasted about 15 minutes. We stopped at rest area at mm 129. There was a weird sign that had a handicapped emblem with words underneath saying Crush Crime. Our next stop was Buc-ee’s at mm 240 (Harrisonburg, home of JMU, Austin's college). We got to the hotel by 3:00 pm. Hotel was ok - light out at work area, no end table on my side and a crack in wardrobe. We did get a first floor room. We had dinner at Sweetwater at 6:00 with Jason, Shimul and Austin.
Baseball Game - Fairfax
Day 3 (Jul 9)
- Baseball Game at Patriot Park North in Fairfax - 22 miles
Thursday: We are at Springhill Suites in Ashburn. The a/c in the room did not work well. There were 2 thermostats - one on wall and on the a/c itself which was tucked in under a shelf. it was hot so i got up to lower thermostat on wall. That did not change anything, I changed the thermostat on the a/c. The a/c came on, ran for 5 minutes and then cut off. I got back up and lowered temp to 62. It kept going on/off. Patsy finally got up at 4:00. I slept in. When I got up I set the fan on the a/c to continuous blowing. We'll see how that works. Patsy went back to bed and I went to gym and walked on treadmill for 35 minutes. Patsy was still asleep, so I had breakfast and brought her some coffee back.
- Update 1: Dylan's first game will now be at Patriot Park 6 at 2:00 pm. We got ready and picked up Dylan at 11:45. We had lunch at Chick-fil-A and then arrived at PPN at 1:00. Dylan had a great game. He had one single. In the field he caught 4 ground balls for outs and 2 fly balls. One of the grounders - he stepped on second and threw the runner out going to first - an unassisted double play.
- We went back to Jason's. Dylan showered and Austin, Dylan, Patsy and me went to Alo to get Dylan a 1/4 zip. The place was a little too fancy for me. We picked up dinner at Taco Bamba and went back to Jason's. He was just getting back to work. Shimul had left for an outing for the evening. We started a puzzle but interest fizzled out as Jason and Austin was trying to order furniture from IKEA for Austin room at JMU. We called it an evening and came back to hotel.
- Friday: We checked out of the hotel and moved to Jason's. I walked 40 minutes on the treadmill and got a bowl of cereal at hotel. I brought coffee back to the room. We checked out of hotel and went to Diner for breakfast/lunch. We picked up some Chick-fil-A for Jason and Dylan.
- Dylan got home from work, rested and we headed to game at PPN about the time Austin got home from work. We got to PPN by 3:00 for 4:00 game. It was a close game, lost 4-3 in last inning. Dylan pitched 3 innings and did well.
- Jason and Austin grilled burgers and hot dogs for dinner. We finished a puzzle.
Baseball Game - Arlington
Day 5 (Jul 11)
Baseball game at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, VA - 19 miles
- Saturday:
- We went to coffee shop with Jason for breakfast. We did a couple of projects with Jason before going to Dylan’s game at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, VA against AYRA Green at 2:45 pm. Great game. Down 1-0 in bottom of 7th. Scored 2 runs to win 2-1.
- We came home and had multiple types of pizzas from Jason’s pizza oven. Jugnu and Samantha came over.
Sterling, VA
Day 6 (Jul 12)
Baseball game today in Springfield today against VSA Select
- Sunday: I had some cereal and coffee for breakfast. Dylan's game was delayed until 1:30 pm so we decided to head home instead of going to the game. We decided to stop in Wytheville for the night (half way). We stopped at Rest Area and the JMU sign was displayed. Isent it to Austin.
- We had dinner at Applebees and then checked into hotel. Another loud a/c.
- We read our Bible plan and then watched Lakepointe church. Josh preached on what the Bible says about hel
Smyrna, TN
Day 7 (Jul 13)
- Monday: We left the hotel around 8:00 am in the rain. OBTW the hotel room had this little area which we've never seen - sink, refer, microwave.
- Traffic moved well all day without any slowdowns except when we had very heavy rain. We stopped at Love's in Bulls Gap around 9:30 ET and filled up with gas and snacks. We stopped at Buc-ees in Crossville at 10:45 and got some lunch. We got home at 12:30 CT, unloaded the car and unpacked.
- Although we had a ton of rain in Smyrna while we were gone the ceiling did not leak (woohoo). Thank you Jesus.
